Koppany Pines

 Back to Nature

In 2020 we saw an advert on facebook for a guesthouse and campsite in rural Hungary located in the Koppany Valley Nature Park.   It took one visit for us to take a leap of faith and start our next life adventure.   It has been a tough journey, but full of experiences and learning.  We’ve had to face our fears, face ourselves and find mental strength to make sure we enjoy as well as tackle the challenges head on.  We have adapted, broken habits, retrained and found strengths in each other we didn’t know existed.  The reconnection with nature has been a key element to our day to day survival and as we go into season three we are going to continue to build on this and share our experience with others and we couldn’t have a better location.

Koppányvölgy Natúrpark  has been left underdeveloped to encourage wildlife and fauna to develop naturally and nature has flourished.  Sit quietly and you have an almost 100 % chance to observe wild animals such as red deer, roe deer and fox. Some other interesting, rare animals that are readily seen are bee-eater, golden oriole, white-tailed eagle, raven, yellow-bellied toad, European pond turtle, stag beetle, alpine longhorn beetle, common glow-worm, praying mantis.  Each morning we wake to a chorus of bird song before starting our day.

KOPPANYSZANTO is a village of just 400 people, surrounded by vineyards, forest and wildlife about 35 minutes from Lake Balaton.  It’s one of five villages in the Koppany Valley.

The healing power of nature has been well documented over the years and studies continue into not just the mental effects on our body but also physical effects of being outdoors now defined as ‘ecotherapy’.

“Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen.”

― Leonardo da Vinci

Being in our autumn years wellness is high on our agenda.  We believe protecting health and well-being through ingestion is key to organic living and evolving Koppany Pines with this in mind.  Our second season firmly established our al fresco Koppany Pines Tea Terrace as a place to come together, have a meal and enjoy a wide range of the ingredients from our vegetable garden, orchard or foraged from the local area. What we can’t grow and find we source from other small scale local supplies to support the local community.  We specialise in well-being infusions, tisanes and botantical bakes and as well as breakfast we are introducing ‘afternoon tea’ and ‘lakeside picnics’ for next season.   Staying over but prefer your own space, why not book one of our ‘delivered to you’ breakfast crates?

Reconnecting with nature has a very calming effect, even just taking a walk you feel the stress of the day relieved. As a couple we have used the nature around us to draw from and  it has brought about a deeper appreciation and connection.  Through training and certification we are now able to offer experiences to take advantage of the nature around us by adding mindful photowalking, forest therapy and lake meditation to our existing activities.   We have a seasonal pool in our meadow and with three of Hungary’s famous thermal baths within a short distance it all partners perfectly to create a wonderful escape from every day life.  You don’t have to stay to take part in these experiences, but we love it if you do!

Into the evening you will find us cooking around the campfire, at the campsite bar relaxing or stargazing.  We even created a boules pitch last year, which was popular with the families.  At least once a week we create a hungarian dish on the fire using traditional kettle cooking.  5 nights out of 7 we also offer a ‘dine with the host’ option where we invite you to our dinner table to enjoy the meal of the day.  Other options include the pizzeria in the village, the fish and chips at Nagkonyi or a visit to a restaurant.
